The Company
of C.S.Williams was founded in 1948 by Clifford Williams and
is now one of the longest established building contractors in the South
West.
The building industry during the last half century has been notorious for wild
fluctuations in workload. Early in the Company's history, C.S. Williams realised
the importance of forming a thoroughly competent management team, and creating
a highly skilled workforce by training craft apprentices, to overcome this problem.
Until the advent of the M5 motorway, poor communications through Somerset restricted
the operations of the Company to the home area. However, the demand in that area
required the utmost flexibility, and ensured the accumulation of expertise in
widely different fields of building and construction.
Thus, the projects undertaken have been very diverse, and many of the best known
buildings in Taunton were either built or altered by C S Williams at various
times.
From the start, the Company has played its part in the provision of new housing
for Local Authorities, and latterly for Housing Associations and developers.
Since the 1940's more than 1000 houses, flats and bungalows have been built in
many different types of schemes.
An early involvement was the pioneering "Method" construction system
employed by Authorities for education projects, an early attempt to rationalise
school buildings and similar work. A dozen new schools were constructed with
this system, as well as other education, care social buildings.
A family tradition of quality workmanship and staff development ensure that
our customers receive the highest standards of service.
